Wargrave 5 Miles event
The Wargrave 5 Mile Road Race and Fun Run have sadly been cancelled. We look forward to welcoming you to Wargrave next year.
The 2020 Wargrave 5 Mile Charity Road Race will take place on Sunday 7th June starting at 10.00am and will be preceded at 9.15am by the Kids' Fun Run.
The Wargrave Charity Road Race, and the junior fun run event are planned and organised by a committee of about 6 members from the Wargrave Runners Running Club, which is affiliated to UK Athletics. We benefit from being able to provide off road parking for all competitors and hosting the runners village and start/finish line in an off-road location on the Wargrave village recreation ground. The course is well-marshalled with approximately 100 people out on the course or around the start/finish area marshalling and officiating. Marshals cover all road junctions and critical parts of the course from a safety perspective. We will provide a water station at approximately 2.5 miles. All runners will receive a memento.
Wargrave has been host to an annual road run since 1983. Initially raced over a non-standard distance of about 8 miles before settling down to its recent 10 Kilometre distance, it has in that time become a well-established race on the local circuit. For 2019 and 2020, we are making a change and the race will now take place over 5 Miles. The course will be very familiar to those who have previously run the 10K, starting and finishing on the grass of Wargrave Recreation Ground with the rest of the course on undulating country lanes and some residential streets within village with a couple of sections omitted from the previous version of the course.
From 10k to 5 miles
So, why change what has been a successful and popular event? The explosion in the number of sporting events in recent years, not just runs but triathlons, swims and various adventure races, has created a lot of competition for events such as the Wargrave run. We think there is a gap in the market for a 5 Mile road race over a certified course. In fact, we believe it will be the only such event in Berkshire this year. In addition, with the growing popularity of the 5K distance, we hope that a race over 5 Miles (approximately 8 Kilometres) will create an interesting intermediate challenge for those looking to extend from the 5K distance. Whatever your motivation for running, we hope to offer the well supported, enjoyable race experience that Wargrave has become known for.
The proceeds from the race have been used to support a range of charities, both local and national, with over £2,000 raised by the 2019 event.
We will also be hosting a Fun Run for children aged 5 to 14. The course for this race will be about a mile in distance run entirely off-road within the Wargrave Recreation ground, with marshals distributed around the field. The Fun Run attracted about 100 entrants in 2019.
