Wargrave Charity 10K 2011 Race Report

Wargrave’s 10K race is renowned for hot, sunny days, but not in 2011! For the first time anyone currently involved with the organisation of the race can remember it was wet and miserable. Although not so good for the many marshals out on the course it was perfect conditions for runners who benefitted from the cooler weather. That said, 120 entrants decided against running on the day, which is the highest drop out on record for the Wargrave 10K.

The 2011 race was started by Paul Daniels who took time out of his busy schedule and braved the rain to enthusiastically cheer all the runners on their way as they crossed the start line.

For the 518 runners that did start the race they enjoyed plenty of cheerful and encouraging support around the course from the many marshals and supporters. For once the regularly featured hosepipe at Crazies Hill was not required, and the Scouts were deprived of their usual water fight at the end of their water station duty as they were soaked through already!

For the supporters waiting on the recreation ground there were very welcome bacon butties, tea, coffees and cakes served by the local  Brownies.

There was a closely fought race for the first runners over the line with the first five finishers all finishing in under 35 minutes. David Lewis from Reading Athletic Club was first over the line in a time of 34:35, Ryan Brookling was second in 34:41 and Matthew Davenport of Maidenhead Athletic Club was third in a time of 34:42. Paul Gregory of Vale of Aylesbury Athletic Club and Hugh Mackenzie were close behind in 34:49 and 34:55.

The course record, however, remains unbroken at 31:32, set by Phil Wicks of Belgrave Harriers back in 2006, when he took 4 seconds off the previous course record set in 2004, also by Phil.

There were, however, two course records set this year. David Parsons took 15 seconds off the Male Masters course record in a time of  37:46. The previous record of 37:55 had been held by Bruce Tulloh of Portsmouth AC since 1997. Lesley Whiley took 22 seconds off the Female Super vet record with a time of 41:21. The previous record of  41:43 had been held by Marion Rayner of West 4 Harriers since 2000.

The Wargrave 10K course records for the various categories now stand as follows:
